Some reflections on Martin Luther King and non-profit leadership

After spending some time on the production line at the Greater Boston Food Bank, and given the past weekend celebrating Martin Luther King, one reflects on what Martin Luther King might have done in light of what we had seen and experienced, at the Greater Boston Food Bank as well as the larger set of social issues that we are exposed to in our daily lives.

Obama’s effort to address Social Innovation

A new White House Office of Social Innovation has been created with Sonal Shah, most recently heading Google.org’s global development programs tapped to head it. Its focus is on identifying innovation in the social sector, providing funds to innovative startups and promoting volunteerism.

It was a precursor to the news later in the day that one of the two pieces of Service based legislation – the GIVE Act – was passed with a strong bi-partisan majority of 321 to 105 in the House.

Twenty years ago, Alan Khazei started a youth movement in Boston called City Year, a service corps that helped inspire Americorps. Alan has since moved on to take his passion for citizen engagement forward and started another organization, Be the Change, Inc that strives to get citizens participating in the conversations, discussions and debates that affect us as a democracy. One of the initial programs of this organization is ServiceNAtion.org – a movement to promote a culture of service among Americans
